The Ministry of Justice has issued a response to the weekly magazine Sieci regarding the first hours after the arrest of Father Olszewski. The ministry’s initial statement raises eyebrows by referencing the press service of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration. The report also notes that the priest did not file any complaints. The article questions how a frightened, visibly humiliated priest, who had no prior punishments and no charges against him, faced the possible aggressive actions of the ABW, which he and his representative say were conducted at the explicit request of the public prosecutor’s office.

Information from the press service of the Ministry of Interior and Administration states that the detention of the suspect was conducted in compliance with applicable regulations. Michał O. was informed of his rights, did not file a complaint, and signed the report detailing the actions in which he participated without objection. Agents of the Internal Security Service arrested the suspect on March 26 and handed him over to the police. They did not conduct additional activities with Michał O. – we read in the statement.

Beyond the source, attention should be drawn to the term “activities.” According to Father Olszewski’s account, and his defense, the actions taken by the Internal Security Service after the detention appeared to aim at obtaining his repentance. This included an embarrassing stop at a gas station and the exposure of Father Olszewski to the ridicule of bystanders. The officer involved was urged to explain himself to the prosecutor, a move that occurred before the court granted the initial three-month detention for the pastor. It is clear that the pressure on the detainee sought to elicit testimony that could implicate others. The difficulties faced by the priest’s attorney in accessing the client and case files are also noted.

“There were no complaints”

The detainee did not submit any complaints to the Prison Service about the use of safety measures. Moreover, the suspect Michał O. and his attorney did not file complaints about the manner or correctness of the arrest. – argues the Ministry of Justice.

The line of defense and the conduct of Father Olszewski’s attorney are matters for the individuals involved and not for external judgment. In an interview with Sieci, lawyer Krzysztof Wąsowski asserted that the prison service’s current treatment of Fr. Olszewski is appropriate. The issue of the pastor’s letter concerns the initial hours after the arrest, not the present moment.

“Special protection”

Since the temporary arrest decision was issued on March 28, 2024, Michał O. has remained under the custody of the Prison Service. The suspect is covered by special protection under Article 212 ba of the Criminal Code. All protective measures are applied in accordance with current rules, and all actions are described as respecting the detainee’s personal dignity and aligned with the standards set by Article 4 of the Executive Criminal Code. – reads the ministry’s statement.

It is evident that Father Olszewski could not be surrounded by criminals or people who might threaten him. Yet questions persist about the rationale behind chaining the priest en route to the chapel or turning on a light for him in the middle of the night. The use of special protection remains a point of contention for some observers.

Father Olszewski’s letter merits thorough review by the services reporting to key political figures. The tone of reassurance in public remarks contrasts with the priest’s described experiences, leading to skepticism about whether everything described by the priest is accurate. Recounted details leave little room for doubt about the seriousness of the allegations, and they invite careful examination rather than quick conclusions.
