Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated at the press conference following the government meeting that the adopted migration pact would benefit the country. “Poland will be a beneficiary of the migration pact. We will not pay for anything, we will not have to accept migrants from other directions, the EU will not impose migrant quotas on us, while Poland will effectively secure financial support from the EU due to hosting hundreds of thousands of migrants, mainly from Ukraine”, Tusk asserted.
At the outset of his remarks, the Prime Minister addressed security concerns raised during the cabinet session. He noted that the briefing from the head of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration and Coordinator of Special Services, Tomasz Siemoniak, highlighted the rising threats in Europe and Poland linked to aggressive actions by Russian and Belarusian services.
We have discussed this, among other topics, at the European Council. Messages from numerous European capitals indicated that before European Parliament elections Russia is preparing various forms of interference, including attempts to affect electoral processes. This is not an isolated case, but the scale is growing and more troubling,
Tusk said.
The Prime Minister noted that Polish and allied sources indicate that Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and a small part of Finland face such interference and direct actions.
Fires and the border
The Prime Minister assured that there is currently no evidence that the recent serial fires in Poland were the result of foreign services’ activity.
There are no indications that the recent fires are connected to foreign operations,
he said.
Over the past twelve weeks, the Polish state, in part due to cooperation with allies, has thwarted planned attempts at direct actions involving sabotage and arson.
– he added.
He also announced that the government had secured additional resources to support the activities of Polish services.
Today he announced a decision to allocate PLN 1,000 million to strengthen the Internal Security Service and the Foreign Intelligence Service.
– he pointed out.
He also commented on the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border and emphasized that the government intends to finance and reinforce the barrier.
We need to invest more money in the barrier on the Polish-Belarusian border. There has been much discussion about border security in recent years, but the barrier does not meet expectations. The border guard and the army asked for stronger defenses, so the barrier is being reinforced technically to prevent damage that could allow crossing to the Polish side.
– he said.
Nowadays, unlike in the past, the border guard and soldiers emphasize humanitarian considerations. This makes the task more challenging. I ask everyone to understand and support all those who guard the Polish border,
– added the prime minister.
A good migration pact?
Donald Tusk answered a question about the migration pact adopted by the EU Council.
“My government voted against the migration pact, and Poland’s position was clear from the start. The migration pact, in this form, was negotiated during Morawiecki’s government”,
he noted.
“We managed to secure provisions in the Migration Pact that make it harmless for Poland, and we strongly demanded blocking the pact. The Migration Pact, as adopted, gives Poland the opportunity to avoid negative consequences associated with it. Poland does not accept migrants for this reason”,
he added.
According to him, Poland will even be a beneficiary of the migration pact, and any inconveniences linked to its provisions will not concern Poland.
Poland will be a beneficiary of the migration pact. We will not pay for anything, we will not have to accept migrants from other directions, the EU will not impose migrant quotas on us, while Poland will effectively secure financial support from the EU due to hosting hundreds of thousands of migrants, mainly from Ukraine,
– summarized Donald Tusk.
Green deal
The Prime Minister also commented on changes to the European Green Deal. He expressed satisfaction with the progress on this issue.
With regard to the Green Deal, I am moderately satisfied. This mirrors the situation with the Migration Pact: the Green Deal was the program of the previous government, and you have it in your archives — notes, statements, etc. The task of my government from the start has been to remove provisions in the Green Deal that harm Polish agriculture, and a significant portion of those provisions has been achieved,
he said.
“I spent hours translating and discussing individual provisions, and now we have safeguards where many concerns raised by Polish farmers have been eliminated”,
he added.
In closing,
the head of government reflected on the efforts to shape these provisions for the benefit of Polish agriculture.
