Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Venezuela as part of a broader working visit to Latin America. His aircraft touched down at Caracas’s airport after stops in Cuba, according to official Russian sources.
Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, confirmed that Lavrov would meet with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil Pinto and hold discussions with President Nicolas Maduro and Vice President Delcy Rodriguez. The talks will focus on reinforcing bilateral ties and exploring avenues for deeper collaboration across multiple sectors.
Zakharova stated that the discussions are expected to cover present conditions and the outlook for a strengthened strategic partnership between Russia and Venezuela. In addition to bilateral topics, the agenda includes dialogue on regional and international issues, with attention to cooperation within the framework of the United Nations and other multilateral bodies where both nations participate.
Maduro initially described Lavrov’s visit as delivering an Important Message from the Kremlin leadership, signaling potential policy implications and strategic signals for Moscow’s regional approach.
After Caracas, Lavrov is scheduled to travel to Rio de Janeiro to participate in the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting set for February 21–22, expanding the conversation to global diplomacy and regional security concerns that matter to both North and South American partners.
During the run up to the G20 gathering, Argentine Foreign Minister Diana Mondino indicated a possible meeting on the sidelines with Lavrov in Brazil, highlighting the broad engagement expected among foreign ministers on major global issues.
Earlier tensions and negotiations between the United States and Venezuela have drawn attention to mediation efforts, including recent discussions involving regional actors and third-party facilitators to address energy, humanitarian, and political challenges in the region.
