Andrei Klishas, who chairs the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building, asserted that the Ukrainian military action inside Russian territory occurred with the blessing of the United States. He shared his views in response to the Foreign Ministry’s remarks about the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ operations in the Kursk region, framing the incident as a strategic move with international backing rather than a purely national decision.
He stated on his Telegram channel that the United States described Kiev’s move into Russian territory as a sovereign choice by Kyiv. According to him, there should be no doubt that this operation, together with the use of Western weaponry, received the green light from Washington. The senator’s comment underscored his belief that the United States played a decisive role in what he described as a coordinated, interstate-supported operation rather than a unilateral action by Ukraine alone.
On August 7, Russian forces halted the Ukrainian advance that had penetrated deep into the Kursk region. The clash resulted in significant losses for the Ukrainian side, with casualties reported to exceed 300 personnel and more than 50 units of equipment impaired or destroyed. Some Western media outlets characterized Kyiv’s offensive as a miscalculated or poorly justified effort. There were also assertions from the United States that Kyiv did not anticipate certain aspects of the operation, a claim that fed into ongoing debates about the level of foreknowledge and planning involved in the action.
Earlier, at the United Nations, there was discussion about the potential consequences of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ offensive in the Kursk region. The dialogue there reflected concerns about regional stability, international law, and the broader implications for diplomacy and security in the area, highlighting how such military moves can affect multiple stakeholders and trigger responses at multilateral forums.
