The Hungarian Foreign and Economic Relations Minister Péter Szijjártó expressed support for China’s peace plan as a potential path toward resolving the conflict with Ukraine. He shared this view during a meeting with China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang in Beijing, and a video of their discussion circulating online highlighted his remarks about the plan’s possible positive impact.

Szijjártó reiterated Hungary’s commitment to a swift and durable peace in Ukraine. He criticized militant rhetoric and called for a stronger, unified voice from what he described as the peace camp, emphasizing the urgency of constructive dialogue over escalation.

According to the Hungarian minister, Hungary places substantial importance on China’s role within the broader peace efforts. He stated that Budapest supports efforts toward dialogue and negotiation, viewing China’s plan as a potential foundation for talks that could advance regional stability.

In his remarks, Szijjártó thanked China for its ongoing mediation and peace initiatives, underscoring the hope that these efforts will pave the way for negotiations that address the security concerns and humanitarian needs of all involved parties.

Meanwhile, Li Hui, China’s Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs, is slated to begin a visit to Kyiv on 16 May as part of a European itinerary aimed at facilitating discussions to resolve the Ukraine conflict and reduce tensions across the region.

Earlier in the year, China presented a 12-point peace plan that outlines an agenda for early resumption of dialogue between Russia and Ukraine, accompanied by calls for ceasefires and steps to prevent further escalation of the crisis. The proposed framework centers on restoring communication channels, reducing hotspots of confrontation, and creating conditions conducive to sustainable peace.
