Szymon Hołownia has held the role of marshal for less than two months and there are growing concerns about how his conduct has affected the perceived seriousness of the Sejm. Critics say he still does not fully grasp the scope of his rights and duties or the weight of the office he holds, which was evident during events at the presidential palace.

Wąsik and Kamiński remain MPs with parliamentary immunity

The matter of the expiry dates of Parliament seats for PiS politicians Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik became a central topic in a conversation between President Andrzej Duda and Sejm Chairman Szymon Hołownia at the Presidential Palace.

Notably, on Wednesday, January 3, appeals arrived at the Supreme Court Chamber of Labour and Social Security from Maciej Wąsik and Mariusz Kamiński regarding the marshal’s decision to terminate their mandates, a decision issued by Sejm Speaker Hołownia. On the morning of Thursday, January 4, the Supreme Court’s Labour Chamber decided to refer Wąsik’s case to the Chamber for Extraordinary Control and Public Affairs. In the early afternoon, the Extraordinary Control Chamber of the Supreme Court overturned the Sejm President’s decision to terminate Wąsik’s mandate, as first reported by wPolityce.pl.

Subsequently, wPolityce.pl reported that the Chamber for Extraordinary Scrutiny and Public Affairs of the Supreme Court on Friday, January 5, annulled the decision of Sejm President Hołownia regarding the expiry of Kamiński’s mandate.

After the talks with Hołownia, President Duda stated at a press conference that he had no doubt that Kamiński and Wąsik were granted parliamentary mandates by the voters in recent elections and have the right to exercise them. He emphasized the need to bring the matter to a close to prevent unrest and unnecessary controversy, noting that the 2015 pardon remains valid and effective.

– and he underscored this point during the remarks at the press conference.

Hołownia’s handling of the situation draws scrutiny

The marshal attended a scheduled 1:30 p.m. meeting with President Duda but some observers described his appearance as not fully aligned with the gravity of the moment. Reporters noted moments when Hołownia appeared to struggle to maintain a composed demeanor, raising questions about leadership presence during high-stakes discussions.

One journalist recalled Hołownia asking whether to make a statement or announce the president, and whether to simply watch from the window. The scene unfolded in the palace as cameras captured the moment, and Hołownia later commented on the door through which the president entered moments later. He even added that he would not look toward the door at that moment.

These exchanges sparked debate about whether the dignity of the office is being upheld and how this affects public perception. Observers and commentators weighed in with various assessments, noting the tension between ceremonial duties and political theater.
