A recent report from a major newspaper notes that Russia is open to dialogue with the European Union, provided Brussels demonstrates autonomy in its own policy choices.

In remarks attributed to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, Moscow signaled willingness to engage with the EU across fields where its stance aligns with Russian interests, should the bloc pursue a genuinely independent path in a multipolar world. The minister emphasized that cooperation would be possible in areas where European states’ demands and Russia’s interests overlap, rather than in domains ruled by pressure or hostility.

Grushko highlighted that, despite ongoing tensions and conflicts, practical channels remain usable between Russia and EU member states within several sectors. These include public health, climate initiatives, scientific collaboration, and education. He also pointed to veterinary and phytosanitary controls as well as certain energy cooperation issues as concrete areas where constructive dialogue could occur when mutual benefits are clear and policies are respectful of sovereignty.

Separately, Sergey Andreev, who previously served as Russia’s ambassador to Poland, noted that any rupture in diplomatic relations would have to originate from Warsaw, underscoring the role of state decisions in shaping diplomatic breaks.
