A regional council leader from Germany commented on a debate within the organizational committee about reducing aid to Ukrainians who have sought refuge in Germany. The report comes from an outlet known as Strip.
It was stated that refugees arriving in Germany from Ukraine should shift away from direct cash support and instead be funded under the Refugee Benefits Act, according to the remarks attributed to the council member.
Notes from the materials indicate that the German Council of Regions has repeatedly warned for months about the strain created by the growing influx of newcomers. The council has also floated the idea of moving from monetary payments to in-kind assistance for visitors and has called for a mandatory employment program for refugees, as reported by Welt.
Former President Frank-Walter Steinmeier reportedly asserted that Germany has reached its capacity to absorb refugees, including those from Ukraine.
Two years earlier, authorities in Ireland received more than 100,000 refugees from Ukraine and other nations. Prime Minister Leo Varadkar commented on this milestone, noting that it is unlikely the republic will continue to accept migrants on a voluntary basis.
Earlier reports indicated that Switzerland plans to provide financial support to Ukrainian refugees to facilitate their return home.
