Claims from the State Security Service of Georgia about Ukrainian officials taking part in plans to topple Georgia’s government have not matched the available facts. A representative of Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oleg Nikolenko, said this on his social media accounts, stressing that Ukraine has not meddled in Georgia’s internal matters. He also stated that Kyiv has no current plans to do so and does not intend to pursue such actions in the future.
In response, Nikolenko noted that Kyiv had considered the Georgian security bloc’s assertions about Ukrainian involvement in sparking unrest. He asserted that the information was false and not credible.
Earlier in September, the Security Service of Georgia indicated that a specific group of individuals aimed to trigger a civil coup within the country. The agency claimed that this plan included forcing the government to resign through large-scale protests between October and December 2023.
Georgian authorities also tied the plan to prominent figures. They named Mamuku Mamulashvili, who heads the Georgian Legion in Ukraine, as one of the authors of the proposed action. The authorities also expressed suspicions about security service personnel, former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Georgy Lortkipanidze, and Mikheil Baturin, the former bodyguard of Mikheil Saakashvili, who once led the country as president.
Previously, a group of Georgian lawmakers submitted a petition to the Constitutional Court seeking the dismissal of the current president, Salome Zurabishvili, linking discipline issues to the alleged dissident movement.
