A delegation from the Provincial Council of Alicante, the Generalitat Valenciana, and several municipal councils in the Alacantí region, including Mutxamel, participated in a meeting of the NBS4Local Interreg project. The focus is on local policies to implement nature-based solutions for improved water resource management and resilience to extreme weather events.
During the meeting, which began this Tuesday and runs through Wednesday, the Alicante delegation highlighted the Montnegre River Green Corridor as a model of best practice. This initiative, supported by a state agency and six municipalities in the Alacantí region, aims to enhance the channel of the tributary that connects the Tibi dam to its mouth and to develop El Campello into a hub for sustainable tourism, ecological awareness, and educational opportunities, driving regional economic recovery.
Rafael García Berenguer, head of the Water Technologies Committee and mayor of Mutxamel, joined the delegation. Also present were Miguel Fernández Mejuto, one of the project coordinators, and Miguel Angel Ivorra, the general manager of Urban Planning, Landscape and Environmental Assessment.
Both the Alicante Provincial Council and the Valencian government participate as partners in this interregional learning project. The goal is to share effective practices across five European countries. Led by the Hungarian Ministry of Internal Affairs, the project includes partners from Belgium, Croatia, Finland, and Poland. It commenced in March 2023 and runs for four years.
The Mutxamel mayor will outline rehabilitation activities for the Montnegre River and its hydraulic infrastructure as an example of best practice. The ambition is for this work to attract financial resources that support the Green Corridor initiative, which involves the provincial council and six local municipalities: Tibi, Xixona, Alicante (Montnegre area), Mutxamel, Sant Joan d’Alacant, and El Campello.
