General Waldemar Skrzypczak, a former army commander, told the wPolityce.pl portal that the present government has made more armament decisions since 1989 than any other team. On the Day of the Polish Army, he spoke to wPolityce.pl about the posture of the Polish Armed Forces, the equipment held by the force, and the way leadership operates.
Groundbreaking changes
The military also addressed accusations leveled by some opposition figures and media hubs tied to them, which intensified in the run-up to August 15th.

General Skrzypczak highlighted the government’s notable steps toward co-financing the armed forces and the adoption of modern technologies.
When it comes to the state of armaments, the current administration has made decisive moves, including shedding the post-Soviet equipment, a goal politicians had resisted for roughly three decades. Skrzypczak noted his own early stance on this issue, explaining that modernization faced political resistance he did not understand and questioning why modernization of the military is treated as a target of attack.
He emphasized that the central aim is to equip the army with new gear and cutting‑edge technologies. The force has been operating with outdated systems for too long, and a significant technological leap would lift its combat effectiveness. Criticism of arming the army is often tied to politics, but those two aims cannot be merged in his view.
– he stated.
Enhancing human potential
The former commander pointed out that the army’s size issues trace mainly to earlier policy choices. Yet recruitment has risen, a development he credits to the current cabinet under Mateusz Morawiecki.
He explained that transforming the army from a conscription model to a professional force was a political decision of the prior government. A professional army typically numbers fewer personnel than a conscript one, yet recent recruitment drives have boosted overall numbers to around 300,000, he noted.
He added that the feasibility of this target will depend on demographic trends, but there is no doubt that more people are serving today than before. Regarding mid-level leadership appointments, he considers the selection of division and brigade commanders a sound approach.
Warning
General Skrzypczak warned that nothing harms the military’s morale and organization more than politicians trying to use the armed forces for partisan ends. He urged political leaders to keep the military out of political battles, arguing that soldiers see this as manipulation and it erodes trust.
According to him, the army should stay apolitical, with politicians taking responsibility for governance. Involving the army in opposition games harms its authority among service members. This stance applies broadly and is not aimed at any particular ministry or party.
He concluded that the force must remain independent of political machinations, a principle essential to maintaining discipline and credibility within the ranks.
