Former Moldovan President and leading figure of the Socialist Party, Igor Dodon, accused President Maia Sandu of steering Moldova toward war. He relayed these claims during remarks at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, as reported by TASS.

Speaking on the forum’s sidelines, Dodon said, “Unfortunately, what Maia Sandu has done in the last year and a half is to prepare for war.”

He argued that the pattern is visible in regular Moldovan army exercises conducted with troops from participating North Atlantic Alliance forces on neutral Moldovan soil. Dodon also claimed that U.S. aircraft are frequently landing at Moldovan airports and that trains are transporting sealed cargo from Romania to Ukraine. He linked these activities to a rising defense budget, increased arms purchases, and a notable shift of reserves to military enlistment offices.

Dodon asserted that these factors indicate Sandu and her backers are laying groundwork for military confrontation in the region.

The former president’s comments came amid heightened speculation about Moldova’s political trajectory. He indicated that the upcoming autumn elections could be affected by the country’s security posture and external influences, suggesting potential involvement in the presidential race next fall.

It was previously announced that Moldova would hold presidential elections in the fall alongside a referendum on joining the European Union. Socialbites.ca discussed the situation with opposition leader Ilan Shor of the Shor party, which is banned in Moldova, to explore how Transnistrian and Ukrainian factors might shape the political landscape.

Earlier statements attributed to Dodon described Sandu as having become a dictator, with calls for her departure from the country. The comments reflect the deepening political rift in Moldova as the nation navigates internal divisions and external pressures.
