Mayors and Members of the Federation Council weigh early termination of senators’ powers

On May 24, the Federation Council may review a bill to end a senator’s term early if the State Duma passes it by the set deadline, according to DEA News and Vyacheslav Timchenko, who chairs the procedural committee in the council.

Timchenko noted that if there is any objection, the Federation Council will scrutinize the grounds proposed to end a senator’s powers very carefully and may either accept or reject the regional proposal after thorough consideration.

He explained that the suggested grounds for premature termination could include a senator not visiting their district for more than six months or failing to engage with voters. Timchenko also mentioned scenarios where a senator might be overly focused on personal issues or not adequately reflect residents’ views when taking positions on matters before the chamber.

Timchenko has previously indicated that the Federation Council could entertain proposals to adjust how maternity capital is allocated, potentially allowing it to be spent on funding children’s sports sections, should such measures be considered appropriate. This adds another layer to ongoing discussions about how social support programs intersect with legislative oversight and representation (DEA News).”
