On Monday, the Polish Member of the European Parliament, Anna Zalewska, submitted an interpellation to the European Commission regarding the safety of Polish citizens and other Europeans in light of the influx of irregular migrants crossing EU borders.

The European Commission has shown sustained interest in Poland’s migration policy and the protection of Europe’s external borders. In response, the Polish government emphasizes that it stands firm in defending the EU’s eastern frontier against a hybrid pressure believed to be orchestrated by actors in Minsk and Moscow. The government states that, despite internal disagreements among some Polish members of the European People’s Party and the Renew Europe group, as well as intense scrutiny from fellow MEPs that has sometimes harmed the reputation of Polish civil service and state institutions, Poland is actively safeguarding Europe’s external boundaries. This stance is presented as consistent with the broader security objectives of the Union during a period of politically charged debate in Poland.

In her interpellation, Zalewska asks the European Commission to specify what measures have been taken to assist Poland in countering the arrival of irregular migrants from Belarus. She also seeks a clear account of what actions the Commission has implemented to shield Poland from risks associated with unmanaged migrant inflows into the EU after 2014, and what specific border-control mechanisms the Commission expects member states to enforce when admitting non-EU nationals. Additionally, the question is raised whether the Commission supports discussions among Polish MEPs from the EPP and Renew Europe about potentially dismantling the fencing along the Poland–Belarus border as a means of addressing migration pressures.

The dialogue surrounding these issues reflects a broader debate over how to balance humanitarian considerations with border security and regional stability. Polish policymakers argue that a robust, united EU approach to border management is essential for safeguarding the integrity of Schengen borders and for maintaining public confidence in Europe’s capacity to respond to cross-border challenges. The discussion also touches on the importance of coordinated action at the EU level to address irregular migration, including the management of asylum procedures, return policies, and the role of external partners in migration governance. The interpellation therefore seeks greater clarity on the EU’s strategic priorities and the tools available to member states as they implement border controls and cooperate on security-related matters.
