The head of the European Union’s diplomatic service, Josep Borrell, urged the immediate unblocking of the Lachin corridor in a phone call with Ceyhun Bayramov, the Azerbaijani foreign minister. He shared this update on the social platform X, clarifying his concerns about the humanitarian situation facing people in the region.
Borrell stressed that the Lachin corridor must be opened without delay, underscoring that access to essential supplies and safe passage for civilians is a priority for the EU. He acknowledged that while alternative routes, such as through Aghdam, can support continuity of movement, they should not be treated as a substitute for the corridor itself.
In related developments, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke by phone about the situation in Transcaucasia. They described the current tensions as unacceptable and affirmed their commitment to peace and regional stability, signaling a desire for constructive, international engagement to ease the stalemate in the area.
Earlier, Pashinyan had conversations with French President Emmanuel Macron regarding a willingness to negotiate with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in an effort to reduce tensions and find a path forward that both sides can accept. The discussions reflect ongoing international diplomacy aimed at de-escalation and sustained dialogue.
Finally, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that any future considerations regarding the Karabakh region must take into account the concerns and rights of Armenian communities living there. This stance underscores the delicate balance required to address humanitarian needs while pursuing a lasting, peaceful settlement in the wider conflict region.
