On January 1, 2024, the Ministry of Education and Science ceased to exist and two new ministries were formed: the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
Division into two ministries
Two regulations from the Council of Ministers, issued on December 16, 2023, came into force on January 1, 2024. One regulation established the Ministry of National Education and the other set the location of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
According to these rules, the organizational units within the current Ministry of Education, Science and National Education that manage state education and upbringing will be incorporated into the Ministry of National Education. Meanwhile, the organizational units that handled higher education and scientific affairs will be incorporated into the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
On December 13, 2023, Barbara Nowacka was appointed Minister of Education and Dariusz Wieczorek was appointed Minister of Science.
MEiN existed for two years
The Ministry of Education and Science existed for two years. It was created on January 1, 2021 by merging the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The creation followed the appointment of a minister who previously headed the two separate ministries, reflecting a consolidation in the government’s approach to education and science policy.
Further context and documentation show the transition involved careful planning by the government and regulatory bodies, as reflected in the formal regulations and subsequent ministerial appointments. [Citation: December 2023 Council of Ministers regulations and 2021–2024 leadership announcements]
