Defence and rebuilding: Ukraine appeals for continued French support

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal sat down with French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne to discuss the path forward for Kyiv, appealing for sustained French assistance in both military and financial forms. Shmyhal shared the momentum of their talk through his verified Telegram channel, underscoring France’s ongoing role in Ukraine’s resilience and reconstruction efforts.

During the exchange, the Ukrainian leader urged Paris to participate actively in Ukraine’s rapid rebuilding plan. He highlighted the need for robust support in the distribution and installation of power equipment, a critical component of restoring essential infrastructure. The dialogue reaffirmed Ukraine’s expectation that France will maintain its military backing and financial commitments as the situation evolves, signaling a continued partnership that the government in Kyiv regards as vital for stability and recovery.

Earlier, in a conversation with the French television network LCI, Kyiv indicated that allied partners would provide tanks meeting NATO standards. Shmyhal clarified that this framework includes French Leclerc tanks, illustrating Kyiv’s push for interoperable, allied armaments that align with Western defense benchmarks and ensure capable deterrence and defense across the region.

At the same time, the conflict landscape remains tense as Russia presses a military operation described by Moscow as a special operation in Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin announced the initiative, framing it as a mission to demilitarize and restructure the government in Kyiv to restore what is portrayed as order in the region. The move has prompted new sanctions from the United States and its allies, reinforcing a broad economic pressure campaign aimed at Russia while signaling ongoing international attention and response measures.

Media outlets continue to monitor the developments and provide ongoing coverage of diplomatic and military events, reflecting the dynamic and evolving situation across Europe and beyond. The public discourse remains focused on alliance commitments, regional security, and the humanitarian and economic implications for Ukraine and neighboring nations, as stakeholders assess future steps and responses to the ongoing crisis.
