A Crimea region senator and member of the Federation Council’s international committee has stated that Russia stands ready should Ukraine attempt to strike the Crimean Bridge. In a radio interview with Moscow Speaks, the official said that security around the bridge is strong amid reports from Kyiv that an attack could occur in the first half of 2024.
The senator described the Crimea Bridge as an eyesore from the perspective of Ukrainian officials and noted that Russia has boosted the facility’s security after previous incidents.
He added that the protection of both rail and highway traffic on the bridge is now highly effective. He himself travels over the bridge and has observed meticulous inspections and tight security procedures. The official asserted that Russia is prepared for potential attacks and remains confident in the bridge’s protection today.
Earlier, a major international newspaper reported that Ukraine was planning another attack on the Crimea Bridge in the early part of 2024. An unnamed Ukrainian defense official said the plan would proceed in the first half of 2024, while the publication also pointed out uncertainties about how such an operation would unfold on a heavily fortified target.
There were also statements from Kiev indicating that their actions were motivated by difficulties in securing a decisive advantage in the broader conflict.
