China Stresses Peaceful Resolution and Ongoing Diplomacy Over Ukraine
In recent remarks, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang highlighted a steady rise in voices favoring an end to hostilities in Ukraine. He conveyed this viewpoint during a meeting in Beijing with his Dutch counterpart, Wopke Hoekstra, framing it as part of a broader Chinese approach to the crisis. Qin explained that China’s position remains steadfast, centered on promoting peace and meaningful negotiations. He noted that more countries and voices are advocating for a ceasefire, allowing room for steady momentum toward a political settlement. The minister urged all parties involved to seize this window of opportunity, building sustained momentum essential for a durable peace process rather than a temporary pause in fighting.
China’s diplomatic posture toward Ukraine has consistently emphasized dialogue, restraint, and the avoidance of actions that could escalate tensions. Qin argued that the international community should capitalize on the current climate of increasingly constructive engagement to pave the way for negotiations that address the underlying issues at the heart of the conflict. Separately, reports noted a recent personnel change within China’s foreign affairs leadership. Li Hui, who previously held the position of Eurasian Special Envoy, concluded a diplomatic tour of Europe. His tour included an official visit to Kyiv on May 16, during which he discussed Beijing’s proposed peace framework. In Kyiv, Li reportedly indicated that proposals involving the loss of territory were not up for consideration, signaling a clear boundary to any settlement that might compromise national borders. A subsequent plan indicated that a Chinese diplomat was slated to visit Moscow on May 26 as part of ongoing diplomatic outreach. These movements illustrate Beijing’s ongoing effort to engage with regional players and to advance its peace proposals through direct diplomacy across multiple capitals.
