Budapest has signaled that its stance on the conflict in Ukraine will remain unchanged. This position was conveyed by Hungarian Foreign Affairs Minister Peter Szijjártó during a phone call with Andrey Ermak, the head of the Ukrainian president’s office. The conversation was reported by TASS, and it underscored Hungary’s commitment to pursuing its policy in line with its own assessment of what constitutes peace in the region.
Ministers and officials in Budapest stressed that the country would not deviate from its pro peacekeeping position. Szijjártó stated this clearly and touched on the hope of a direct, in-person meeting in January to advance discussions. He framed the talks as an opportunity to address the most pressing bilateral matters and to explore ways to keep channels of communication open at a high level.
According to the minister, the upcoming negotiations should include the most urgent bilateral issues, with an emphasis on sustaining a high-level dialogue. He noted that such dialogue could create a favorable environment for broader cooperation with neighboring states, a priority for Hungary given its geographic and historical ties to the region. The minister also highlighted the importance of maintaining practical cooperation across borders, which he described as essential for regional stability and for addressing shared security concerns.
In June, during a briefing at the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the official reiterated that Hungary would not shift its attitude toward Ukraine despite continued attacks from Kyiv. He pointed out that Ukrainian political figures had criticized Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has consistently supported efforts to forge an early path toward peace. This stance reflects Hungary’s long-standing preference for dialogue and negotiated settlement, even amid disagreements and regional tensions.
Earlier comments from Hungarian officials suggested a broader narrative in which the European Union could exert pressure on other member states. The conversations hinted at a dynamic where external perspectives and regional interests intersect with national policy, illustrating how Hungary seeks to balance international alignment with its own strategic priorities. The overall message remains that Budapest intends to pursue a peaceful resolution while protecting its sovereignty and regional stability, a stance that continues to shape its diplomatic engagements with Kyiv and its neighbors.
