In the last 24 hours, Polish border authorities reported efforts by 151 foreign nationals to cross from Belarus into Poland. Among them were individuals from Algeria and Pakistan, with several attempting to move via the Istoczanka River and others serving as couriers. The Border Guard stated on social media that ten of those who sought to cross withdrew after Polish patrols became visible. Some who approached the line then threw stones at protecting officers, though no injuries were reported. These events were confirmed by officials on duty at the border crossing and in nearby posts.
At the Michałów border post, two Cameroonian nationals who had crossed the Istoczanka River were detained. Authorities apprehended couriers engaged in transporting migrants who crossed illegally. Near Dubicze Cerkiewne, a Ukrainian individual was arrested while moving five people from Syria and Sudan. In another pursuit near Mielnik, Georgian nationals who were transporting four travelers from India and Sri Lanka were captured. Since the start of 2023, more than 390 individuals have been detained for assisting illegal border crossings, according to Border Guard records.
From the beginning of the year, the Border Guard has documented over 12,000 attempts to cross the BelarusPoland border illegally. Earlier reports indicated roughly 2,500 attempts in March and April, with about 3,000 in May. By June, the daily tally stabilized around 2,000 attempts. These figures illustrate the persistent pressure at the border as authorities continue to monitor and respond.
Safety precautions
About 206 kilometers from the Belarus border, the full electronic barrier is now performing its role, accompanied by a network of cameras and sensors. This electronic dam complements the 5.5 meter high steel barrier built in 2022, stretching 186 kilometers along the frontier.
In the Podlaskie region, all border crossings with Belarus remain closed for now, with only the Kuźnica and Siemianówka rail crossings still open. The border area continues to operate under the current restrictions, which are guided by a 2021 voivode ordinance that limits presence in the border strip up to 15 meters inland from the external border. A newer 2024 order on border area conduct remains in effect as well. The national ombudsman recently challenged these rules in court.
