As a journalist observed, the ambassadors’ conference held today did not function as a true gathering of diplomats. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited only heads of foreign missions officially recognized by the government led by Donald Tusk, which narrowed the attendance considerably.
More than 50 legally serving ambassadors, including Marek Magierowski and Tomasz Szatkowski, did not receive invitations to this event organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The guest of honor at this year’s event, branded by the Ministry as the Ambassadors’ Conference, is the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb.
Przydacz: This is not a meeting of ambassadors, but a gathering of facility managers
Marcin Przydacz, a member of the Law and Justice party, spoke about the situation on wPolsce24 television.
For the first time in the history of the Third Polish Republic, there was no genuine Ambassadors’ Conference because there were almost no ambassadors present. Radosław Sikorski, it seems, has hindered the functioning of Polish international missions at the request of Prime Minister Tusk, Przydacz commented on wPolsce24.
The speaker suggested that rather than calling all invited diplomats, the government should summon only those who actually hold the authority to act, bring required documents, and present credentials, including powers from the president themselves. He also argued that allies and close associates who are not ambassadors would not represent Poland at the highest levels.
The former head of the Presidential Office for International Policy noted that, under these circumstances, the ministry’s event cannot be properly described as the Ambassadors’ Meeting.
He went on to say that what was labeled a Conference of Ambassadors has, in practice, become a Conference of Facility Managers. This shift is interpreted by some as a mockery of the Polish diplomatic service, a move that those close to Sikorski and Prime Minister Tusk bear responsibility for.
