The last time the popular leaders in Alicante province opted for a new head of the New Generations, the Valencian Community was governed by an absolute majority under Alberto Fabra, while Mariano Rajoy resided in La Moncloa. In those days, several right-leaning forces, including the main party, the PP, Vox, and Ciudadanos, were still finding their footing. Times have changed. In 2012, then Torrevieja mayor Luis María Pizana led the party’s youth wing at a congress in La Nucia, and today, with Pizana moving away from the early political line and a looming 2023 electoral cycle, the PP has kicked off a renewal of its youth leadership. The party’s machinery is being primed—from base mobilization to coordinated campaign strategy—under the leadership of Carlos Mazón, who aims to secure the Palau de la Generalitat. A leadership vote has been scheduled to take place in Elche.

The present head of New Generations has convened the provincial board for a Wednesday afternoon meeting. The key order of business is an extraordinary congress scheduled for Elche on September 17. The choice of Elche is deliberate. The decision to hold the gathering in this city commemorates Sergio Rodriguez, a former councilor in Elche and a city adviser who died in a summer car accident. Rodriguez, who oversaw New Generations in his city, had coordinated youth councils across the province. His untimely death prompted the party to move quickly to determine who will become the visible leader at Alicante’s border.

Within Alicante, there is a broad expectation of a consensus candidate to lead New Generations. The organizing message across all party structures, including local assemblies, stresses unity and the avoidance of division. Last year’s XV National Congress was led by Bea Fanjul, with Edelmira Ferri representing Guardamar del Segura.

The formal replacement of New Generations’ visible chair in the province is part of a broader party renewal strategy aimed at local, regional, and national cohesion. The effort emphasizes fostering a direct link between the youth wing and local councils, the regional apparatus, and the national organization. The project is currently steered by Alberto Núñez Feijóo as the national leader.

The ups and downs of the PP in Alicante have delayed momentum for youth leadership renewal. The current president is nearing forty, and new youth figures are needed to energize the movement.

In the last three years, Alicante’s PP has had only a handful of presidents. After the abrupt departure of Jose Ciscar, the second-in-command, Torrevieja’s mayor Eduardo Dolon took the helm in 2019 for a year, followed by Carlos Mazón. A year later, Mazón became president of PPCV and mayor of Benidorm. Tony Pérez led at the provincial level, while national leadership changed hands from Pablo Casado to Feijóo. The party has chosen to delay the youth leadership renewal until now to stabilize the organization.

Awaited court action in Alicante

The renewal of New Generations in Alicante has been marked by controversy. The Alicante Court No. 7 sentenced the municipal youth organization, led by a long-standing administrator since 2015, to convene an extraordinary congress to elect a president in March.

A member of the youth wing who pursued the case through the courts argued that the party charter did not justify delaying the congress or the necessary formalities. The judge sided with the petitioner, ruling that no exceptional reasons had been established to excuse the scheduled congress. The organization has operated under a temporary director who, by the party’s charter, filled a six-month term before calling the congress or assembly specified in the regulations.

With the renewal process now underway across the province, the expected outcome is to align the provincial leadership with the party’s broader renewal agenda. The situation suggests that the pending matters will be resolved in the coming months, paving the way for a refreshed leadership structure in Alicante.
