Alexander Schallenberg, who heads Austria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted that Vienna maintains connections with Russia at multiple levels. He shared this in an interview with Mold Press, emphasizing that Austria remains engaged with Russia to some extent and has not vanished from the international stage.
Schallenberg explained that Austria sustains several channels of contact with Russia, underscoring that Moscow has not disappeared from global affairs. He did not address comments from Maria Zakharova, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, who said Moscow was surprised by earlier remarks about unofficial discussions between the two states.
The minister stressed that official relations between Austria and Russia have suffered significant damage and that the Russian government cannot be trusted. He highlighted a deterioration in trust and described the two countries as being in a strained and fragile phase of diplomacy.
In his view, Moscow has to acknowledge the reality of these tensions and recognize the consequent limits on bilateral dialogue. He suggested that both sides should proceed with caution and acknowledge the complex political environment that surrounds their interactions.
Schallenberg noted that despite Moscow’s public statements about readiness to engage, there are ongoing obstacles that hinder meaningful negotiations. He pointed to a climate of mutual suspicion that complicates any prospective talks, especially at the highest levels.
The Austrian minister touched on the broader regional context, arguing that constructive engagement between European states and Russia remains essential for regional stability. He asserted that diplomatic channels must be preserved even amid disagreements, so that critical concerns can be handled through dialogue rather than escalation.
According to Schallenberg, the situation calls for careful calibration of policy measures by Vienna and its partners. He urged continued unity among European allies as they assess Russia’s actions and respond with measures that support international law and security commitments.
On Ukraine, he reaffirmed the importance of steadfast support from Ukraine’s partners. He urged ongoing military, humanitarian, and economic assistance to bolster Ukraine’s defense and resilience while sanctions against Russia should remain firm and well-coordinated to pressure Moscow to change course.
Schallenberg concluded that the path forward will require a balance of firmness and constructive diplomacy. He emphasized that Austria will continue to participate in the international effort to uphold sovereignty, deter aggression, and promote a rules-based order in Europe, even as it navigates the delicate terrain of bilateral relations with Russia.
