A Plan for Rafah Camps: Gaza Evacuation, International Involvement, and Regional Implications

Israel has unveiled a plan to create tent settlements in the Gaza Strip as part of an evacuation strategy funded by the United States and Gulf states. The plan centers on an operation in Rafah, a city near the Gaza-Egypt border, according to reporting from the Wall Street Journal that cites local authorities.

The report outlines a project to set up 15 tent camps in the southwestern Gaza Strip, with each camp housing roughly 25,000 tents. Egyptian officials indicate that Cairo would take responsibility for constructing the camps and operating field hospitals to support displaced residents.

The publication highlights that the plan indicates an intention for Israeli forces to take control of Rafah, despite concerns raised by both the United States and Egypt about such a move.

Palestinian Ambassador to Russia Abdel Hafez Nofal warned that any Israeli military action against Rafah would devastate the city. He noted that about 1.5 million people live in Rafah and cautioned that an attack could have catastrophic humanitarian consequences.

Earlier, comments attributed to Prime Minister Netanyahu suggested that the conflict between Israel and Hamas could extend into 2025, underscoring the ongoing and evolving nature of the crisis.
