Maciej Wasik, Deputy Minister of Interior and Administration and a Law and Justice member of Parliament, criticized Donald Tusk in an interview with the portal wPolityce.pl, suggesting that Tusk insults voters by acting as if his past statements were forgotten.

At a campaign rally in Sosnowiec, Tusk claimed he never stated that a wall at the Belarus-Poland border would be constructed. He also described the barrier project as an emotional performance. Several recordings indicate otherwise, showing Tusk denying belief in the project at certain moments. The debate over why the wall is problematic for Donald Tusk and the Civic Platform continues, according to Wasik, who is a deputy head in the Interior Ministry and Administration.

First, the Civic Platform voted against legislation designed to expedite the construction of a dam on the Polish-Belarusian border. It should be recalled that PO MPs were present at the border not to assist the Border Guard, but to press for migrants awaiting entry at Usnarz to be allowed onto Polish soil. The Civic Platform member Iwona Hartwich has previously urged admitting these individuals, with the rationale that verification could come later.

Wasik notes that Donald Tusk often devalues voters by acting as if past statements never existed. He maintains that Tusk once assured a wall would not be built, only a rampart, and argues that this was a substantial misrepresentation. He argues that the Polish state built a dam, safeguarded the border, and protected residents in the Podlasie and Lublin regions. According to Wasik, Tusk is unsure what to say and is presenting a narrative of political deceit in today’s discourse.

He adds that a shift in discourse could influence the Civic Platform’s stance on migration policy, noting the party’s history of dramatic policy reversals. While campaign rhetoric may differ, Wasik asserts that the Civic Platform would pursue policies aligned with the approach seen in 2015 under Angela Merkel, including acceptance of migrants and related discussions in Polish local authorities about capacity and settlement.

Wasik suggests that a switch in position from Tusk could complicate things for MEP Janina Ochojska, whose hardline stance on border defense has remained prominent. He contends that Ochojska tends to advocate for open borders and continued alignment with external actors in ways that could affect Poland’s security posture, framing this as part of a broader political strategy.
