A security zone should be created around the Zaporizhzhya NPP to prevent accidents caused by hostilities. This conclusion is included in the final report published on the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) website.
Agency inspectors examined the situation of four working Ukrainian nuclear power plants (Rivne, Khmelnytsky, Southern Ukraine and Zaporozhye). The first three work fine.
As for the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, the IAEA results are as follows:
– It is necessary to immediately establish a security zone around the ZNPP to prevent a “nuclear incident”;
– It is necessary to create safe corridors for access to the nuclear power plant, including the provision of “everything necessary”;
– At the station, IAEA inspectors recorded physical damage;
– A series of events occurred at the nuclear power plant that violated the principles of nuclear safety;
– Part of the damage was found near the power units of the nuclear power plant;
– the IAEA calls for the cessation of hostilities, for the cessation of shelling of the ZNPP and adjacent areas;
– The Agency considers it important to restore the backup power supply line to the ZNPP itself to ensure uninterrupted operation of the plant’s cooling system and other systems.
The IAEA urges the Russian and Ukrainian parties to ensure that ZNPP personnel “have normal work, rest and training for personnel, as well as keep the channels of communication between factory workers and international authorities in working order.”
Facility personnel should work on possible accident scenarios in the ZNPP. The IAEA added that the issues of protecting personnel and securing the station “have taken over the Russian forces.”
The day before, the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that two experts of the organization remained at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) to continue monitoring the situation.
The agency stressed that on September 5, four IAEA experts left the nuclear power plant after several days of work to ensure the safety and security of the ZNPP as planned.
“Two more experts remained (at the station) in the context of their continued presence at the site,” the IAEA said in a statement. Said.
Last Thursday, Zaporizhzhya NPP and Energodar were visited by an IAEA mission led by Rafael Grossi, Director General of the international agency. At the end of the tour, the official said that the integrity of the station’s facilities is of concern, given the escalating conflict in the region.
The bombardment – the Russian side blames the Ukrainian side – partially damaged a power line near the ZNPP.
Ukrainian state agency Energoatom reported that on September 3, the fifth power unit of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant was shut down after the bombing of the communication lines. on the evening of September 3, 2022 <...> At 19:35, power unit No. 5 of ZNPP was disconnected from the electricity grid”.
They added that at the moment, the sixth power unit, which has limited capacity, provides electricity to Ukraine through a backup line, and also meets the needs of the station, continues to operate.
