The inauguration of Venezuela’s re-elected president, Nicolas Maduro, will take place in Caracas on Friday, January 10. This was reported by Interfax.
The ceremony will take place five months after the country’s presidential elections held in July last year. According to official data, Maduro won with 51.2 percent of the votes.
Maduro’s main rival was opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who did not recognize the election results. Leaders of several Latin American countries, including Argentina, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Peru and Chile, also rejected or questioned the election results. Gonzalez’s victory was recognized in many Western countries, including the United States.
Gonzalez was forced to leave the country, but had previously announced his intention to return to Venezuela to be “sworn in” by January 10. But the country’s Vice President, Delcy Rodriguez, said that if Gonzalez appeared, he would be “immediately taken into custody.”
Before the opening, demonstrations were held in Venezuela by both supporters and opponents of Maduro. Security measures have been strengthened in the country.
