“The ambassador is the representative of the national interests of the state. In emergency situations it is changed,” says Dr. Witold Waszczykowski in an interview with wPolityce.pl. The former head of Polish diplomacy evaluates a fragment of President Andrzej Duda’s parliamentary speech on the large-scale recall of ambassadors. “I don’t understand why Sikorski, thirty years after the fall of communism, is reaching for old frameworks and returning to these people,” says the former PiS parliamentarian.
Speaking to the Sejm today, President Andrzej Duda emphasized that, in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, the Government and the President must work together to promote Polish interests in the international arena. He accused Sikorski and Tusk of violating the long-standing principle of cooperation on the matter. In an interview with the wPolityce.pl portal, Witold Waszczykowski assessed that the formulations used by the head of state were very accurate.
For years there have been two consultation circuits on the appointment of ambassadors. The first was confidential distribution. The Minister of Foreign Affairs presented the candidate’s proposal to the Prime Minister. If he agreed, the candidacy was sent for consultation with the President. It’s been like that for years
– reminds Dr. Waszczykowski.

The ambassador represents the country, not just the minister
The president regretted that the government had decided to immediately remove more than half of the ambassadors without consulting the president, while Poland was celebrating the 25th anniversary of its accession to NATO.
The president told the truth. The ambassador represents the country, not just the current foreign minister or prime minister. After all, ministers can change. The ambassador is the representative of the national interests of the state. In emergency situations the ambassador is changed, or when he violates work discipline and customs. The ambassador representing the country is not just an official subordinate to the current minister, but an official of the entire country. For this reason, any changes to these positions must be agreed with the President of the Republic of Poland
– emphasizes the former head of Polish diplomacy and gives an example.
When a Polish ambassador participates in a UN conference on human rights and raises issues related to the family, he does not express the views of others, among others. Kotula, but the provisions of the Polish Constitution. It is not about the minister’s views on gay marriage, but presents legal principles that describe the family and marriage. The ambassador represents the country, not my opinion. Kotuli, who fulfills his position temporarily
– explains Waszczykowski.
The former PiS MEP mainly comments on the president’s words on the position of the ‘Ambassador’s Conference’ in 2021. The defense of the Polish authorities against a hybrid attack by Belarus and Russia was described in a special statement as “shameful ” for Poland and suggested crimes against humanity.
The President quoted one of the statements of the “Ambassadors Conference”, which accused the Polish state and the defenders of our border. The President is absolutely right that many of the statements from this “conference” were shameful. I am proud that, thanks to my efforts, a significant number of these ambassadors have become former ambassadors. They were not suitable for this position
– says the former Foreign Minister, who also comments on Sikorski’s idea that graduates of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations could also apply for important positions in Polish diplomacy. An institution “penetrated by Russian special services from the very beginning of its existence.”
I don’t understand why Sikorski, thirty years after the fall of communism, is reaching for old frames and returning to these people
– explains Witold Waszczykowski.
