The media row over the non-admission of the daughter of the Speaker of the Sejm to a Catholic school led to a comment by the head of the Ministry of National Education. “This is harmful to a child and I am even more surprised that a non-state school, but especially a Catholic school, stigmatizes a child in this way,” says Barbara Nowacka. Theologian and publicist Fr. Dr. Janusz Chyła, who wrote on X that a Catholic school “has the right to operate on its own principles and that it is not discrimination that (for various reasons) it does not accept all children.”
Marshal of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia noted in the context of the newly started school year that his daughter had also gone to school and was “worried but delighted”.
One of the Internet users asked the Speaker of the Sejm under his entry why he did not send his daughter to a Catholic school. He replied that the school did not want to admit his child because of, as he said, his political position.
Mania and I were not accepted there. As it was explained to us – for me
– he admitted.
Interestingly, the comment has been deleted and is not visible under the post on the Instagram platform, so it can be assumed that the Speaker of the Sejm most likely deleted it.
“Nowacka’s “Holy Indignation”
When asked about the issue by journalists, the Education Minister said that “it is unacceptable to stigmatize any child because of the opinions of his parents.”
This is harmful to a child and it surprises me even more that a non-public school, but especially a Catholic school, would stigmatize a child in this way.
– said Nowacka.
She stressed that non-public schools have their own autonomy and can admit anyone they want, but they should not be influenced by the political activities of parents.
But did they make a deep examination of conscience and consider who they are attacking? If they wanted to attack a hated politician, there are so many ways, Marshal Hołownia experiences them every day, why did they decide to attack a child? I simply consider it unworthy, the head of the Ministry of National Education stressed.
She added that non-public schools use public money.
I regret that Catholic schools do not use them in a good and sensitive way
– said Nowacka.
Public schools operate on the principle of universal accessibility and are fully funded by public funds. Non-public schools can set their own recruitment criteria.
Non-public and public schools and institutions managed by natural and legal persons that are not local government units are financed in the form of subsidies transferred from the budgets of local government units.
They receive a subsidy for each pupil equal to the amount allocated for such a pupil in the education part of the general subsidy of the local government unit.
Fr. Dr. I think he is responding to the accusations
The issue of not admitting Szymon Hołownia’s daughter to a Catholic school was commented on social media by Fr. Dr. Janusz Chyła, a teacher of dogmatic theology, publicist and writer.
The media controversy around the topic of “must a Catholic school accept all applicants” is becoming more and more widespread? That is why I remind you: he has the right to act on his own principles; it is not discrimination that (for various reasons) it does not accept all children; must guarantee the safety and comfort of all students
– wrote Fr. Janusz Chyła.
And besides, where is the logic in first banning religion from schools, introducing abortion, and then requiring the child to be raised in a Catholic school?
– added the priest.
