The High Court of Audit approached the National Public Prosecution Service to investigate “the desirability and justification of the purchase of Hermes software.” The issue was discussed on Platform
Inspectors from the Rzeszów branch of the Supreme Audit Chamber entered the National Prosecutor’s Office to check the advisability and cost-effectiveness of purchasing Hermes software.
A few months ago, the media reported that in 2021 the Prosecutor’s Office had purchased a specialized Hermes espionage system – a more advanced version of Pegasus – for PLN 15 million.
The Hermes tracking system, purchased by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, is used to collect and analyze large amounts of data from open sources, including telecommunications networks, social media and internet traffic. “The analysis of data available on the internet using the Hermes system allows us to determine what a particular person or entity has left behind on the internet.”
– says the High Court of Audit in today’s announcement.
““Manipulation is used to mislead public opinion.”
Stanisław Żaryn, Advisor to the President of the Republic of Poland and former Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Prime Minister’s Office, commented on the information.
The manipulations, here prompted by the Supreme Audit Office, are used to mislead public opinion and maintain the lie about the alleged mass surveillance of Poland under previous governments.
– he wrote on the X platform, retweeting his earlier post about the Hermes system.
Żaryn: The Hermes system has nothing to do with tracking, surveillance or operational activities
Another part of manipulation concerning the activities of the prosecution service and the services. Contrary to the claims of the High Court of Auditors, repeated by some media (!), the Hermes system has nothing to do with ‘tracking’, ‘surveillance’ or operational activities
– Żaryn wrote earlier, referring to the announcement of the Supreme Audit Office.
The Public Prosecution Service itself explained in March that Hermes is used to automate the process of collecting information from open OSINT sources (publicly available data).
– he remembered.
The manipulations, here prompted by the High Court of Auditors, are used to mislead public opinion and maintain the lie about the alleged mass surveillance of Poland under previous governments. These are absurdities that have been repeated by PO politicians in recent years as part of their cynical party struggle
– he concluded.
