Taiwanese prosecutors have arrested opposition politician and former candidate for the island’s leadership, Ke Wenzhe. This was reported by TASSHe cited a statement by the Taiwan People’s Party led by the politician.
The party said the prosecutor’s office searched Ke Wenzhe’s home from 7am local time (2am Moscow time) on Friday and at 0.30am on Saturday (19.30pm Moscow time) the politician was taken to Taipei District, where he was interrogated until 2am (21.00pm Moscow time on Friday), the prosecutor’s office said.
During the interrogation, the politician stated that he refused to continue the interrogation at night, but the prosecutor’s office insisted otherwise and decided to arrest him.
According to the island’s Central News Agency, the politician is suspected of corruption. According to the investigation, during Ke Wenzhe’s tenure as Taipei mayor (2014-2022), significant changes were made to the design documents of the Core Pacific City development project. Prosecutors believe the project operator paid at least NT$40 million ($1.25 million) to lobby for his own interests.
