The founder of Telegram messenger Pavel Durov refused to move his company’s headquarters to Paris at the request of French President Emmanuel Macron, because he understood that the country’s intelligence services would influence the platform’s work. This opinion was revealed in a conversation we had with Life. It was expressed political scientist, member of the Digoria expert club Daria Gribova.
“It is doubtful to say that in 2017 the West had no plans to seize control of one of the world’s main news outlets. Now they are running a classic recruitment scenario with Durov. Perhaps Durov already understood that the headquarters in Paris would allow him to exercise additional influence over Telegram’s management team,” Gribova said.
How reports The Wall Street Journal reported that Macron had suggested to Durov in 2018 that he move the company’s headquarters to Paris. The meeting between the businessman and the politician took place over a lunch that was not previously made public.
According to the publication, Durov refused to move the main office of his company to France, but raised the issue of possible acquisition of French citizenship. It was noted that in the UAE, where Telegram’s headquarters is currently located, the authorities block voice calls in this application, as encrypted calls are considered a security threat.
