Bolivian authorities have put the possibility of re-election of the president to a referendum in December. This was announced by President Luis Arce on the X social network.
“In fulfilling our obligations to the country and the people, we have submitted to the Supreme Electoral Court the referendum questions that will allow Bolivians to consider re-electing the president after the break,” he wrote.
“Do you agree that the possibility of consecutive re-election of the President and Vice President, as determined by the Constitution, should be expanded to include re-election after the recess, which would require an amendment to the Constitution?” – such a question will be put to the vote.
Arce and former President Evo Morales plan to run in the 2025 elections. Both represent the largest left-wing party, the Movement Towards Socialism, which has supporters of both Morales and the incumbent president.
According to Arce, the referendum decision has nothing to do with “electoral calculations or personal ambitions”.
Morales, who was in power between 2006 and 2019 and was re-elected to a third term by court order, attributes the referendum idea to his intention to prevent the current government from participating in the elections.
Also in 2023, the Bolivian Constitutional Court ruled that it is impossible to serve more than two consecutive or intermittent terms.
Previously the White House commented There are rumors that he was involved in a coup attempt in Bolivia.
