“Recently, Krzysztof Bosak raised the idea of right-wing primaries to select a candidate for the presidency. A few words from a supporter of cooperation with the Confederation, which we showed in Bydgoszcz, why it is a bad idea in the current situation,” wrote PiS MP Łukasz Schreiber on Platform X, presenting a number of arguments against right-wing primaries.
Firstly, too little time and too many problems to solve. Let us take the biggest of them: who would have the right to vote in it, how to verify this with different parties, etc. Secondly, if there is a common candidate, we would have to go much further, and I do not think anyone is ready for that. I mean, for example, the club in the Sejm and the parliamentary elections. Thirdly, from which electoral committee would such a candidate run? Party – why primaries? Independent – who would then spend money on the campaign
– he argued Lukasz Schreiber.
Fourthly, are you sure that everyone in the Confederation itself is in favor of the idea and would submit to such choices and then get involved in the campaign? I sincerely doubt it. Fifthly, from an electoral point of view, a dubious move. There are no miracles: such a candidate needs to gather less than 2 or 3 candidates, and the total vote pool has no chance of exceeding 50%. Sixthly, the Polish model of presidential election (as bad as the prerogatives of the head of state) means that in the first round we are dealing with real primaries. Since 1990, the second round has always included the candidate of the generally understood right-wing camp and the candidate of the liberal left (except for the anomaly in 2000)
– the PiS politician stressed.
Schreiber: I envision a pact to mutually support the right-wing candidate in the second round
Seventh, what is advantageous in the US will not be in Poland. There is no second round abroad, so such a step is needed there. There is no tradition of raising money for candidates in our country. There are no procedures to secure the system. There are also no simultaneous congressional elections, which is an additional motivation in the US. Finally, there is no candidate for vice-president, which was sometimes the hope to unite the parties after difficult primaries, see Reagan-Bush in 1980
– he added.
The PiS MP noted that he saw no advantage in the possible organization of primaries on the right.
In short, I don’t really see the benefit. However, there are enough objections and unfavorable media ready to discredit the idea. But is the idea all bad? I imagine such a pact in the form of a joint commitment to mutually support the candidate who goes to the second round. As well as a debate in front of conservative media with candidates participating who support some specific set of values
– he wrote.
