“If I were in the Élysée, I would withdraw from the NATO unified military command,” Jean-Luc Melenchon announced in an interview published, among others, in “Gazeta Wyborcza”.
The leader of the radical left party France Untamed, which is part of the alliance of left-wing French parties New Popular Front, gave an interview that was conducted in the framework of the collaboration of ‘Gazeta Wyborcza’ with other European newspapers. In this case “La Repubblica” and “El Pais”.
In it, Melenchon answered the question of whether he still supported France’s withdrawal from NATO.
NATO carries within itself the logic of war. I choose the logic of disarmament and pacification. This is a political line that is not just a pipe dream. If I were in the Élysée, I would withdraw from the unified military command of NATO. In a planned and organized way. Especially at a time of general threat of war, so that we do not get involved in this brawl
– replied one of the candidates for the French prime ministership.
I never said that the French would abandon their neighbours or Europe. We are not leaving the European Union. We are Europeans, but not NATO members. The European treaties state that our defence against aggressors is collective. So we would support EU measures to help Ukraine, depending on the specific situation. Our programme maintains strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty
– he said.
The Joy of Tusk
Law and Justice politicians drew attention to the fact that after the publication of the election results in France, which showed the best result for the left-wing New Popular Front, Donald Tusk commented as follows:
Enthusiasm in Paris, disappointment in Moscow, relief in Kiev. Enough to be happy in Warsaw
– wrote Tusk on July 8, 2024.
Reaction from PiS politicians
Why do Tusk’s tweets get old so quickly?
Remember how enthusiastically @donaldtusk welcomed @JLMelenchon’s victory in France? And then – how they tried to pretend his pro-Russian, anti-NATO views were a thing of the past?
As Tusk wrote in Paris – enthusiasm, in Kiev – relief… Without @pawelyablonski_ even Melenchon’s withdrawal of France from NATO could be accepted with a smile, but there are still some unnecessary sours…
