NATO aims to strengthen its presence in the Middle East and Africa to maintain peace in the region. This was stated in the joint statement declaration Alliance members after the summit in Washington.
Summit participants said the alliance’s “southern neighborhood” offers opportunities for cooperation on issues of mutual interest.
“Through our partnership, we seek to contribute to greater security and stability in the Middle East and Africa and to promote peace and prosperity in the region,” the document said.
It also said NATO members had adopted an action plan to strengthen the southern approach. The bloc plans to open an office in Amman, the capital of Jordan, and continue working with the Iraqi leadership.
