Marshal Szymon Hołownia noted at the meeting with farmers that he cannot make promises on behalf of the government, but it is in the Sejm that legislative solutions are created, so it is important for him to listen to those who can help solve of problems. The government makes decisions, but they are often hatched in the Sejm, he pointed out.
The Chairman of the Sejm today, together with the Minister of Agriculture, Czesław Siekierski, and the Minister of Funds and Regional Policy, Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz, met with representatives of farmers and the agri-food industry. The idea of organizing a meeting at which representatives of different parties could talk arose in February after a conversation between the Marshal and representatives of farmers who were protesting in front of the Sejm at that time.
The government is the place where decisions are made, but these decisions are often made in the Sejm. We will not replace the government here. I will not make any promises on behalf of the Prime Minister or the Ministers
– said Hołownia at a meeting with farmers.
Ideas from the Chairman of the Sejm
He emphasized that he wanted to “meet and listen to people who can ensure that the problems are actually solved” and to listen to what the Sejm “can get out of this.”
Do you need specific legislative solutions from us, a specific working method, or perhaps you need social and community hearings?
– said the Marshal of the Sejm to the participants of the meeting.
He also presented the idea that, just as the Minister of Foreign Affairs annually presents information on the principles and tasks of foreign policy, the Minister of Agriculture should once a year present information to the Sejm on the state of Polish agriculture and Polish food security.

Hołownia also spoke about changes in agricultural policy in Poland, including: on the transit of agricultural products from Ukraine.
The Ministry of Agriculture reports that in April the transit of wheat, corn and rapeseed decreased twice compared to the second half of 2023. Sugar exports to our market are limited. An embargo applies to many agricultural products
– said the Chairman of the Sejm.
The Marshal of the Sejm explained to the audience that the problems in agriculture were still ongoing and that they would not be solved “miraculously” today.
The problems we face have not gone away with the end of, say, most of these farmers’ protests. They are still in a different phase, some are still alive and inflamed, others maybe a little less, new ones will appear soon. That is why it is so important that, knowing the situation Poland finds itself in today and how easy it will be for our opponents to divide us internally and thereby weaken the country, we try to de-escalate the situation wherever possible.
– noted Szymon Hołownia.
Let us be honest with ourselves: we are not capable of miraculously solving all of today’s problems here at this table.
– added the Marshal of the Sejm.
It turns out that the purpose of the meeting between the chairman of the Sejm and the farmers was to take photos with them, which could be useful to him in the context of the upcoming presidential elections.
