In April, Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Freedom of Expression, claimed that the Security Service of Ukraine had requested the blocking of more than 26 Telegram channels and said that this request had been accepted for consideration.
Koval noted that Ukrainians should be careful when using Telegram and stated that the ambassador remained Russian. He also emphasized that attempts to establish official contact with Telegram have not yet been successful.
According to research, more than 70% of the Ukrainian population has access to this messenger.
The country’s authorities have already considered the possibility of banning social networks and instant messengers, including Telegram.
A bill regulating the activities of Telegram and other public platforms regarding information distribution was introduced in March. In addition to blocking individuals and channels, this bill also envisions having a Telegram representative in Ukraine to interact with government agencies.
Olga Gerasimyuk, head of the National Council for television and radio broadcasting, said in late April that Ukrainian authorities were working with the European Union to regulate Telegram, including possible blocking and fines.
