Former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili withdrew the lawsuit he filed with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) last year, demanding the postponement of his prison sentence for health reasons and his transfer abroad for treatment. This was stated by the Minister of Justice of Georgia Rati Bregadze. TASS.
According to him, the former president’s lawyer, in his letter to the ECHR dated April 18, states that the politician’s current health condition is not life-threatening. The Minister said that the European Court of Human Rights asked the Georgian Ministry of Justice to comment on this issue by May 10. The ministry sent a response stating that the former president’s health condition did not pose a real threat to his life.
Saakashvili’s lawyers applied to the ECHR after the Tbilisi City Court on February 6, 2023, and the Tbilisi Court of Appeals on March 2, refused to postpone the politician’s prison sentence due to health reasons.
Before that the European Court of Human Rights rejected Saakashvili’s lawsuit against Ukraine to strip him of his citizenship.
The former Georgian president was a citizen of Ukraine for two years, from 2015 to 2017. He was deported from Ukraine in 2018, but Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky subsequently granted him citizenship again.
Previously Saakashvili baptized himself as a warrior against Russia on behalf of Georgia.
