Cezary Tomczyk, Secretary of State at the Ministry of National Defense, announced that he would submit requests to the prosecutor’s office regarding the Smolensk subcommittee. The applications concern former heads of the Ministry of National Defense: Mariusz Błaszczak and Antoni Macierewicz, who headed the subcommittee. The State Secretary announced reports to the public prosecutor’s office in an interview for TVN24. “This is an attack by politicians of the December 13 Coalition,” PiS club president Mariusz Błaszczak said at a press conference.
Tomczyk announced on TVN24 on Wednesday that he would file applications with the prosecutor’s office against Błaszczak, as former head of the Ministry of National Defense, and against Antoni Macierewicz, former head of the Smolensk subcommittee. According to Tomczyk, Błaszczak was told that “bad things were happening in the subcommittee, but he did not take any step to stop it. The deputy head of the Ministry of National Defense stated that people who “destroyed evidence” in the investigation into the disaster in Smolensk and which destroyed the Tu-154M aircraft with tail number 102 in Poland, should be held accountable; Tu-154M aircraft number 101 crashed near Smolensk on 10 April 2010.
Tomczyk also accused Defense Ministry authorities during the PiS government of wanting to “erase all the work of the team of Minister Jerzy Miller and Maciej Lasek.” Yesterday, the KO politician published in the Subcommittee to re-examine the Tu-154M aircraft accident.
In this way they tried to erase all the work of the team of Minister Jerzy Miller and Maciej Lasek. Misiewicz on behalf of Macierewicz. “Very urgent”. Now it is very urgent to solve this
Hmmm, perhaps because the subcommittee created by Antoni Macierewicz, as the former head of the Ministry of National Defense himself repeatedly emphasized, based its work on the findings of Jerzy Miller’s commission and the aim was to falsify them.
Moreover, Tomczyk himself and the government he co-founded did not even “try” to erase the work of Antoni Macierewicz’s subcommittee, but they succeeded. In January 2024, he announced that, following the decision of the management of the Ministry of National Defense, Jerzy Miller’s report had been returned to the ministry’s website and was “the only valid report on the Smolensk disaster”.

Błaszczak: ‘They do not accept that a tragedy has occurred’
When asked at a press conference in the Sejm on Thursday about these words of the deputy head of the Ministry of National Defense and the announcement of submitting an application to the prosecutor’s office, Błaszczak said that it was “revenge arising from the fact that they, those in power today, do not accept that a tragedy has occurred.”
Firstly, I did not interfere with the work of the subcommittee, I had no such right, the subcommittee was independent, and secondly, this plane was simply useless. It is difficult to expect that after the Smolensk attack, a second identical aircraft, maintained in Russia, would be used by anyone.
– said the former head of the Ministry of National Defense.
He added that Tomczyk’s statement was intended to cover the “solemn nature of the 14th anniversary of the memories of those who died in the Smolensk attack.”
I accept this as an attack by the coalition politicians on December 13. If we add to this the shameful behavior of people who provoked Marshal Józef Piłsudski Square and attacked those who wanted to commemorate those who died in the attack on April 10, 2010, we have the whole picture of this situation.
– said Błaszczak.
On April 10, 2010, the crash of the government aircraft Tu-154M near Smolensk killed all passengers and crew: 96 people, including President Lech Kaczyński and his wife. The Polish delegation was on its way to the ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre.
How did TVN “celebrate” the anniversary of the Smolensk disaster?
This week’s TVN24 program ‘Black and White’ contained a report in which, among other things, said prosecutor Krzysztof Schwartz, head of the investigation team No. 1 of the National Public Prosecution Service, which has been investigating the Smolensk disaster since 2016. The report also shows a Tu-154M number 102 of the Ministry of National Defense standing in the hangar of the military airfield in Mińsk Mazowiecki. As reported, this plane is a twin of the plane that crashed in Smolensk on April 10. , 2010, has been destroyed, “first “it served for experiments of two committees investigating the Smolensk disaster, now it is evidence in the prosecutor’s investigation.”
The investigation into the Smolensk disaster of April 10, 2010 was first conducted by the Military District Office in Warsaw. After the reform of the public prosecutor’s office by the PiS government, the investigation was taken over by the National Public Prosecutor’s Office from the then liquidated military public prosecutor’s office. Since March 2016, the case has been handled by Investigation Team No. I of the National Public Prosecutor’s Office. The investigation into the Smolensk disaster has been extended until the end of this year.
Two committees, two reports
In 2010-2011, the causes of the Smolensk crash were investigated by the State Aviation Accident Investigation Commission, chaired by the then head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration Jerzy Miller. In the report presented in July 2011, the commission determined that the cause of the disaster was the descent below the minimum descent height, which resulted in a collision of the aircraft with trees, leading to the gradual destruction of the Tu-154M -structure. According to the Commission, neither the audio recorders nor the flight parameters confirm the suspicion of an explosion on board the aircraft.
The Subcommittee for the Re-investigation of the Smolensk Disaster was established under the regulation of February 4, 2016, signed by then Minister of National Defense Antoni Macierewicz. In April 2022, Macierewicz presented a report on her work that questioned the Miller Commission’s findings. Presenting the report, Macierewicz then said that “the cause of the April 10 disaster over Smolensk was the act of illegal interference by the Russian side on the Tu-154M aircraft with the delegation of the President of the Republic of Poland” and “ The The most important and indisputable evidence of this interference was an explosion in the left wing, 100 meters before passing the birch plat on Dr.’s plot. Bodin, over an area where there were no tall trees or other obstacles that could endanger the aircraft.
In April last year, the Smolensk Subcommittee filed a notice with the Prosecutor’s Office on suspicion of committing the assassination of President Lech Kaczyński and the murder of the remaining 95 people who traveled on the Tu-154 on April 10, 2010.
Dissolved subcommittee
The subcommittee led by Macierewicz was dissolved on December 15 last year, just after Donald Tusk’s government took power. On January 19, a team was set up at the Ministry of Defense to evaluate the functioning of the subcommittee.
In February this year, Deputy Minister Tomczyk said in the Sejm that the Smolensk subcommittee led to the destruction and loss of 23 parts of the Tupolev, which crashed near Smolensk in 2010. The Deputy Minister said the Ministry of National Defense would request that those responsible be held accountable.
The report of Jerzy Miller’s committee was often criticized by experts of the subcommittee led by Antoni Macierewicz, PiS politicians and the families of some victims of the Smolensk disaster. It perpetuated the Russian version of the events of April 10, 2010. The extent to which the authorities of the Russian Federation can be trusted is exceptionally clearly demonstrated by the large-scale aggression against Ukraine that started in February 2022.
Cezary Tomczyk is not the only politician from the current ruling coalition who yesterday, on the 14th anniversary of the Smolensk disaster, instead of honoring the memory of the victims, focused on accusations and attacks on the previous government. PiS vice-president Antoni Macierewicz’s speech in particular caused anger.
By the way, perhaps the Deputy Minister should finally remember that he does not work in the non-existent “Ministry of Political Revenge”, but in the Ministry of National Defense, one of the most important ministries, especially in light of the current situation beyond our eastern border.

Perhaps it is time for Minister Tomczyk to finally focus on modernizing the Polish Army and increasing Poland’s defense capabilities, taking care of the Polish soldiers and their morale (not about the “Morales brothers”, as is often the case in the Platform, but about morale!), and not about a political spectacle? It seemed that this was the reason that Civic Platform had figures like lawyer Roman Giertych, and that Tomczyk was entrusted with much more responsible tasks. Maybe even too responsible?
