“Drunk on his splendor,” Krzysztof Varga, columnist, writer and literary critic, wrote about the Sejm chairman in Newsweek.
Szymon Hołownia was the target of “Newsweek”, on whose pages Krzysztof Varga decided to subject the Chairman of the Sejm to a kind of psychoanalysis, critical, of course, because this, as you can see, is required by the “wisdom of the stage”. before the election tour in Poland.
Varga delved deep into the history of Szymon Hołownia’s activities, much deeper than in recent years, presenting the Chairman of the Sejm as an egoist, in love with himself and his own dilemmas, which he enjoys presenting to the public. The Newsweek columnist noted that Hołownia’s true nature is preaching, in which he excelled and which allowed him to develop high eristic skills, which he now uses freely as an active politician. This is also the reason for the high popularity of the Marshal, which has become the main attraction of the so-called “Sejmflix”.
A distant moralizer
The author of the article discussed examined the current journalistic activity of Szymon Hołownia and noted that in his texts he usually adopted the attitude of a detached moralizer, who, however, found it difficult to hide his haughtiness or mild tone, especially towards non-believers. Varga, as befits dedicated “Newsweek” columnist Tomasz Siekierski, considers his Catholicism, or at least its previous expressions, as the Sejm chairman’s biggest problem.
He also points out the ‘boasting’ of Hołownia, who – according to Varga – likes to celebrate his life (both publicly and privately), of which quasi-exhibitionist journalism is an example, but also, for example, missionary activities.
Hołownia’s power also came from his “active love of neighbor” – he founded foundations that helped the poorest regions of Africa, “feeding, healing, educating and providing work”, which he boasted about in his books.
– wrote Varga.
He even remembered Hołownia’s columns, in which he alternated his photographs of his travels through the Holy Land, which, in his opinion, was evidence of the desire to give the impression of Hołownia’s extremely close and elite relationship with the Savior himself, who Varga described. as “a preacher from before 2000 years.”
Master of Science?
The columnist recalls in a clearly discernible tone of reluctance or even disgust the subsequent ‘actions’ of the young Hołownia, who managed to charm the audience during meetings with his readers, where he could sometimes find time for a ‘begging old woman’. ‘ and delves into an hour-long conversation with her.
This exhibitionism could be unbearable, even though the author himself tried to ridicule it by telling how he was moved by his own kindness and how tears came to his eyes at the thought of his own generosity.
– Varga noted.
In his opinion, the Marshal of the Sejm, who cannot deny a certain erudition and the ability to write and speak effectively, has long been playing a kind of game aimed at gaining recognition and sympathy in order to enter the national political scene enter. . In this context, the future leader of Poland 2050 had to pretend that he was a “simple boy”, that he did not care about positions, that he did not have the right competencies, but at the same time worked on his image. as a new politician, distance yourself from the current political class – buddy.
Delay
Varga believed that Hołownia had long been well aware of his skills and the fact that he was above most Polish politicians – both in terms of emotional and analytical intelligence – and that the pose of an “ordinary boy from Białystok” in itself was a nuanced game. developing a future political career.
The author of the ‘Hołownia analysis’ did not miss the fact that, as a declared Catholic, his attitude towards relations between the state and the Church, the episcopate and pro-life movements had a ‘procrastination’. This was mainly reflected in the fact that he positioned himself at the center of moral disputes and criticism from both sides, but Hołownia always found arguments – much to Varga’s disappointment – to defend the Polish bishops or the traditional model of society.
Regardless of whether Hołownia’s position can actually be called a traditional social model (however, there are significant deviations here), the Newsweek columnist seems to complain that in the name of personal benefits he has joined the chorus of radical anticlerical circles that are starting to to take the lead in the current government coalition. He is even outraged by the fact that he is slowing down the processes of secularization initiated by the films “Clergy” and the documentaries of the Sekielski brothers.
Hołownia consistently downplayed the crimes of the Church in his books, in ‘God. Life and Creation” reduces these accusations to the sentence: “The existence of roads is the main cause of accidents.”
– noted the publicist.
It seems that the main accusations, which could probably be called ‘pre-election’, have been formulated by the author of the publication in ‘Newsweek’ as a cross-pollination of post-conservative and preachy tendencies, which the newly discovered politician of the ‘smiling Poland’ to ‘move to the left like a band’.
The nature of the left-liberal media’s attitude towards Szymon Hołownia bears the characteristics of a well-thought-out sine wave, depending on the needs of the KO election campaign and the election calendar. When Hołownia is needed to remove PiS from power, he is complimented as the fresh blood of ‘cool Poland’. When he is no longer useful, or – worse – becomes a threat, for example before the presidential elections, he is portrayed as a propagator of obscurantism and a charlatan.
