Tusk’s coalition partners merely act as errand boys. And even though the guys themselves may not like it, they still don’t have a better option.
“Sit!”, “fetch!”, “to the kennel!”, “lie down!” – this is the basis of the language used in the ruling coalition. Such words, of course, are not used, but sentences that are more careful than the language of training should be interpreted in this way. When Donald Tusk lets out some growl that is clearly also addressed to Szymon Hołownia, he tells him: “Don’t jump, boy, because you won’t jump any higher.” Partnership in the ruling coalition means some kick and others crawl. And when some pedal too hard, others groan and whimper. But that’s all. Changing roles is not possible.
When the great linguist Donald Tusk made a rather artless comment: “The tactical mood of some supporters of the Civic Coalition for the Third Way allowed us to remove PiS from power. In this election [samorządowych] the only criterion will be our own conviction,” a great work of exegesis and deconstruction has begun in the media in Poland. Szymon Hołownia felt called to the board and wrote: ‘The intention was that we would defeat PiS once and for all, and not for a hundred days. Poles want government results, hospital reform, better schools and simple taxes. This is the goal stated in the twelve guarantees of the Third Way.”
Political scientists and sociologists began to formulate hypotheses about the “crisis” in the ruling camp. But for there to be a crisis, there would have to be a certain degree of equality between the parties. And she was never there. Stories about the great favor that the Civic Coalition apparatus and voters have shown to the Third Way for tactical reasons are complete nonsense. After all, it would be much better for Tusk and his party if they achieved a higher result than they did, because at least they would not have lost to Law and Justice by a margin of more than a million votes. Tusk’s side lost individually, not won.
Since Third Road gained 14.40 percent. all votes, with or without the made-up ‘help’, it would be above 8%. boundary for the coalition. Tusk’s ‘help’ is just another attempt to discredit the Third Way. In fact, it was Hołownia who helped Tusk by collecting votes that probably would not have gone to Tusk. If we assume that the Polish People’s Party had 1.6 million votes in its pocket (in the 2019 elections alone, PSL obtained 1.58 million votes), then let’s say that 1.5 million votes in Poland 2050 are the achievements from Hołownia’s party, and not a gift from Tusk.
Tusk was not a benefactor of the Third Way (Poland 2050), and the KO result, almost 1.6 million votes better than four years earlier, was the most he could achieve. Therefore, he could not convey anything – neither tactical nor fantastic – because he had no surplus at his disposal. His strum on the X-portal is merely a revelation of his true intentions and real language, i.e. training commands.
Tusk assumes that where cooperation is important, i.e. at the level of provincial assemblies, Third Way has no choice and will therefore work with the Civic Coalition after the elections. And at other levels of local government, everyone is fighting for their own interests, which means that Tusk’s party will happily accept even the defeats of the Third Way. In local governments, a few majority coalitions usually form, and no one cares about their ad hoc nature and the fact that they are not permanent. After all, this is sufficient as a basis for dividing the loot.
The principle of loyalty no longer even applies to local governments (in fact, it did not exist in parliamentary governments either). Everyone works for themselves and their own customers. And in 2024, he would have to be even greedier to show his customers that he can still do it. Tusk’s words about “your own beliefs” as the “only criterion” are just a reminder to work for yourself, and even at the expense of your “coalition partners.” For local government customers, the only thing that matters is the size of their own loot; what counts are their own resources. Sometimes it works together with other groups, just like gangs in a certain area work together, but all that matters is “their own”.
For Tusk, governing is merely a sense of power and the ability to demonstrate this power. Ideals, programs, long-term goals are nonsense. Nothing is done here for the state, for the citizens. There are of course some tactical concessions and sometimes something happens to someone, but the subject is the party apparatus or group in power, not the nation. People rule for power, naked power. That is why coalition partners are also treated rudely. It is not about building a central communications port or nuclear power plants or achieving a high level of national prosperity. If you can keep people tongue-tied, so much the better. Mainly because achieving big goals is exhausting and requires competence. Holding the dog “by the muzzle” requires only strength and consistency.
Tusk needs Hołownia as a partner, even if he is only a pillar. She ruthlessly takes advantage of his vanity and narcissism, because this is the best basis for carrying out her plans. Tusk’s plans, not Hołownia’s. Coalition partners are only needed as accomplices in the destruction of power. There has never been a partnership here and never will be. And there’s no need for it. It’s all about errand boys. And even though the guys themselves may not like it, they still don’t have a better option. They must collect and obey orders, at the cost of participating in power.
