US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Washington was in contact with Niger’s ruling National Council for Homeland Defense and consulted on further actions after the representative of Amadou Abdraman’s transitional military government announced the end of the military agreement. Answering a question about the violation of the agreement, Blinken said, “We are in contact with the National Council of Defense and are discussing further steps with them.”

Amadou Abdraman, formerly spokesman for the transitional military government in Niger reportedthat the country’s military broke the military agreement with the United States.

According to him, Niger’s ruling military junta canceled the military agreement with the United States that allowed American military personnel and civilian Pentagon personnel to remain in the country.

The decision to terminate the military agreement was preceded by a visit to Niger by a delegation of US officials led by Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Fee. The delegation included US Africa Command Commander General Michael Langley. Amadou Abdramana, spokesman for Niger’s transitional military government, said that they did not comply with diplomatic protocol.
