“Today’s talks on abortion in the Sejm will not change reality, because until 2025 the president is Andrzej Duda, who will not sign any bill liberalizing the abortion law,” says Deputy Prime Minister, head of PSL, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. He emphasized on the one hand that PSL politicians would support their own project, based on a return to eugenic abortion, the so-called abortion compromise, and on the other hand that they would vote according to their conscience.
Marshal of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia announced on March 5 that he had decided that bills on abortion would be discussed in the Sejm on April 11, just after the first round of local elections. Later that day, after the meeting of the Sejm Presidium, Włodzimierz Czarzasty, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and co-chairman of the New Left, said that he had asked the Presidium to consider the draft laws on abortion during the current session . of the Sejm, but his request was not taken into consideration due to the casting vote of the Chairman of the Sejm.
Hołownia’s decision led to criticism, among other things. of MPs from the left and activists from the Women’s Strike.
PSL leader: On April 11, we will support our project
Today, speaking to journalists, the head of the PSL said that Hołownia’s decision to consider abortion bills in the Sejm on April 11, right after the first round of local elections, is very good.
It is very good that these projects are being considered. We have promised what we have always promised: we will vote according to our conscience
– said Kosiniak-Kamysz.
I know that the President (of the Sejm) has discussed and analyzed it, and it seems that there is a group of MPs who will ensure that all projects reach at least the second reading. We will support our project to return to the rules before the Constitutional Court judgment (October 2020 – PAP) and then hold a referendum
– stated the head of PSL, emphasizing that there is a chance for a calm and long debate on abortion projects.
Until August 2025, no conversations or laws will change reality
Kosiniak-Kamysz also pointed out that Andrzej Duda is the president until August 2025 and that he will not sign any law liberalizing abortion laws.
This deceives the public opinion that the conversations on this topic in the Sejm today are changing reality. The president is president until 2025 and he will not sign these laws. The only thing that can change the president’s attitude is a referendum
– said the leader of the People’s Party.
Four projects that liberalize abortion
Last November, the left submitted two bills to liberalize abortion regulations. One of them partially decriminalizes abortion and its assistance, the other allows termination of pregnancy until the end of the twelfth week of its duration.
End of January this year. A project by a group of MPs from the Civic Coalition parliamentary club was submitted to the Sejm. It is assumed that a pregnant person is entitled to health care in the form of termination of pregnancy during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy.

In addition to these projects, Trzecia Droga (PSL and Polska 2050) submitted a bill to the Sejm at the end of February that reverses the Constitutional Court’s 2020 ruling on abortion regulations. TD politicians also announced a proposal for a referendum on this issue.
Anti-abortion rules in force in Poland since 1993 were amended following the October 2020 Constitutional Court ruling. Previously, the Law on Family Planning, Protection of the Human Fetus and Conditions for the Permissibility of Termination of Pregnancy, known as the Abortion Compromise , also allowed abortion in the case of severe and irreversible fetal impairment or an incurable disease threatening his life. The Constitutional Tribunal ruled that this ground for termination of pregnancy was unconstitutional, sparking a wave of protests across the country.
It is not the first time that PSL politicians, who resort to the story about their own conscience, – in order to distinguish themselves from PO and the left and not to alienate their electorate – want to cover up with a fig leaf the desire to destroy the so-called eugenic abortion and the intention to submit the decision to public opinion whether it will be possible to kill unborn children in Poland.
