The guests of the ‘Salon journalists’ spoke on Telewizja wPolska about the Russian attack on Ukraine that has been going on for two years. Dorota Kania, editor-in-chief of Polska Press, said that “the West has not behaved correctly.” Lawyer Marek Markiewicz, in turn, recalled that Germany hoped to end the war within a week. Bogumił Łoziński, deputy editor of “Gość Niedzielny”, said he was afraid that the Ukrainian people’s sacrifice would be in vain.
Two years of war in Ukraine
According to Dorota Kania, the situation in Ukraine is dramatic: corruption, changes in the army, lack of ammunition. She added that there is no victory on the horizon for Kiev.
The West has not behaved correctly. The German attitude is very decisive there. The Germans refused to help Ukraine, for example let’s not forget this bizarre case with helmets. It is clear that the European community has not behaved very well. For months, the rankings of countries that have helped Ukraine the most included Poland, Great Britain and the United States. The West couldn’t handle it
– Dorota Kania assessed the two war years.
The situation is dramatic. We know about the corruption in Ukraine, the dismissal of military personnel, the dismissal of General Załużny and great confusion in the army. An issue that deeply concerns us – grain and agricultural products – is a separate topic. Also symptomatic is Navalny’s assassination on the eve of the second anniversary of the war and Putin’s declaration that if parliament asks him to, he will respond – another extraordinary operation. The question is where Putin will attack. This is an obvious threat; Putin’s super bomber flight is a show of force. The situation looks bad and there are no signs of Ukraine winning on the horizon. After the successes led by General Załużny, everyone hoped that the war would end within a year. Today there is no end to the war in sight. In my opinion, there will be pressure on Putin from European leaders to reach an agreement, to achieve peace – on Putin’s terms, of course.
– added the editor-in-chief of Polska Press.
Indifference to war?
Lawyer Marek Markiewicz ruled that there is more pessimism than optimism.
The beginning of Putin’s speech was as follows: I have decided. Not a single Duma, not a single Russian nation decided to start a war, but it was he who decided. This must have surprised the whole of Europe, which is theoretically used to different standards. Secondly, no one thought it would take this long. The Germans thought the whole thing would be over within a week, which should clear their conscience. Thirdly, none of us thought that we would experience a war right next to the borders, with the shooting of living people, with mass graves, which – as it turns out – still make a strong impression on us, but we are indifferent to the world. because they are far away. Gdańsk was once far away too
– emphasizes lawyer Markiewicz.
When asked whether Western countries would be as indifferent to the tragedy of the war if it were to hit Poland, lawyer Markiewicz pointed out that “it starts from this, that no one thought about it two years ago, and now everyone says that it is real.”
Dorota Kania pointed out that President Lech Kaczyński talked about it.
The president spoke about the sequence of the attack. Who would have thought that Putin would attack two years ago? Today it’s real. Worst of all, we know today that Europe would not be able to resist this. I am talking about this because I was in the Sejm when the documents brought by Colonel Kuklinski about the attack on Western Europe were published within 48 hours. We looked at it like a picture from space, while it turned out that these plans were very real, with the use of nuclear weapons in Norway, in Denmark
– said the lawyer.
Are Poles tired of war?
During the conversation it was emphasized that Poland and the Polish Church provided enormous support to Ukraine. When asked whether the Poles are tired of the war, Bogumił Łoziński drew attention to the speech of the President of Ukraine at the UN, in which Zelensky said ugly things about Poland and said that if we block grain, we are on the side of Russia .
I think it hurt a lot. This isn’t about politics. It felt like that was the moment something snapped. I compare the aid, what we did, with the first “Solidarity”. It was an outpouring of Poland, completely extraordinary, the grace and care that was poured out – it is difficult to compare it to anything in the world. Journalists came and said they would be taken to a camp, but there was no camp. They were surprised
– pointed out Bogumił Łoziński,
Two weeks ago, Polish churches raised money to help Ukraine. It turned out that these cans were full – this surprised me positively. At the human level, the care for other people, love, despite political unrest, attitude towards Volhynia, we at the level that there is a person, we must help him, we will not ask whether he likes Bandera or not, we will help him. Polish society is extraordinary. This is contrary to the way politics is driven by hate. We are filled with hatred. It has reached the point where many people are not contacting their loved ones, but it turns out that this country around true values can make an absolutely exceptional effort.
– emphasized the deputy editor-in-chief of “Gość Niedzielny”.
When asked whether the sacrifice of the Ukrainian nation would be in vain, editor Łoziński said he was “afraid”.
Germany waited to defend Kiev. It was close there. After defending Kiev, the Russians began to withdraw and bleed dry, and there was a moment, in the spring of the following year, when it was necessary to launch an offensive. At that time the Russians were the weakest, but there was no help. Russia has started rebuilding, they are getting stronger and the Ukrainian army is getting weaker
– Łoziński noted.
Mec. Markiewicz drew attention to the cardinal’s sermon. Nycz on Ash Wednesday, during which he spoke about John Paul II’s attempts to go to Moscow.
He saw that it was a wild part of Europe’s eastern flank that needed to be attracted and civilized. They were offended and therefore did not agree to the visit. Today they tolerate that the president decided to kill Navalny, formerly Nemtsov – it means they want to be in such a country
– said the lawyer.
