Marek Czyż, one of the presenters of the neo-TVP news service “19:30”, complained in an interview for Onet about difficult working conditions caused by the confusion surrounding the illegal takeover of TVP by the current government. He also confidently stated that PiS politicians would eventually end the boycott of neo-TVP and start appearing on their programs.
Did he admit that when he led the first neo-TVP service “19:30” and thus became the main face of television taken over by Donald Tusk’s coalition, things were difficult for him at first?
It was tough, but only for the first twelve hours. A person realizes pretty quickly that once he steps onto the field, that’s where he has to play
– he pointed out.
Has he expressed surprise that the illegal takeover of TVP by Donald Tusk’s coalition provoked a response from PiS politicians and some TVP journalists, who were quickly thrown out of the public media?
Still, I was surprised for a while by the intensity of some of the responses. I mean a kind of physical crowd that emerged during the changes in TVP. I have never seen such a bustle in the corridors, changing looks, tension. This trembling atmosphere did not last long and was brought under control
– he said.
Takeover of TAI headquarters
Did he also express his dissatisfaction that the TAI headquarters at Plac Powstańców Warszawy could not be taken over immediately?
At first I was devastated because it turned out that we had tools at our disposal that were less useful than those on local television – and we had to create a daily newspaper that would compete with the biggest broadcasters
– he said. He did not add that although neo-TVP has been active for two months, it still has a very low viewership, much lower than the number recorded by TVP before the takeover of public media by Donald Tusk’s coalition.
I wondered how long this relief after the change, or the revolutionary enthusiasm, would be enough for the Poles not to hold us responsible for the quality of the broadcast.
– Czyż blurted out, without taking into account that many Poles do not like the changes in TVP introduced by the new government.
Has he admitted that neo-TVP is being boycotted by PiS politicians?
For the time being, we are being carefully ignored by a certain part of Polish political life, which gives the impression that we are leaning to one side. It’s not true. We like to give a voice to representatives of various parties and listen to their proposals and arguments. The condition is that everyone who visits us takes us seriously. And there is a big problem with that
– he said. However, a journalist must understand that it is difficult for PiS politicians to take seriously the public media, which has been illegally taken over by the current government.
However, has he expressed his belief that PiS politicians will eventually appear in neo-TVP programs?
I have a message for politicians who consider the current TVP illegal: you will definitely come to us. We know it, you know it. We understand the formula – we have to practice it a bit, but you come to us. And we invite you. We are always open
– he said.
The best assessment of the quality of TVP after its illegal takeover by Donald Tusk’s coalition is made by viewers. There are few and the viewing figures are dramatic. I wonder if Marek Czyż feels partly responsible for this failure?
