On Thursday, PiS MPs Waldemar Buda and Marcin Horała conducted a parliamentary inspection at the Central Information Technology Center regarding the employment and subsequent dismissal of Maria Thun, described by the media. During a briefing in the Sejm, they argued that Thun had started working at COI and warned that the state budget would probably have to pay her 250,000 PLN. PLN severance pay upon dismissal. Buda announced that as a result of the inspection, they had received emails from the Minister of Digital Affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, confirming that he agreed to Maria Thun’s appointment, but “after a media storm and an order from Prime Minister Donald Tusk , he got her fired.”
The Central Information Technology Center announced on Friday that it had provided PiS MPs, as part of their parliamentary inspection, with documents related to the process aimed at hiring Maria Thun.
The documents provided are: a copy of the email in which the Director of COI received permission to appoint Ms. Maria Thun as Deputy Director of the Central IT Center on January 16, 2024, the draft employment contract dated January 17, 2024 received by Maria Thun, after the presentation of which the procedure was initiated for preparing computer equipment necessary to carry out work, which she did not use, and a copy of the email of January 18, 2024, in which the Minister of Digital Affairs withdraws authorizes the appointment of Maria Thun as Deputy Director of COI.

COI also reported that – in accordance with the articles of association – the institution is managed by the director with the assistance of his deputies; the COI director is appointed and dismissed by the minister; Deputy Directors of the COI are appointed and dismissed by the Director of the COI, and the appointment and dismissal of the Deputy Director of the COI requires the prior approval of the Minister.
It was also reported that there have been no competitions for the position of Director of COI and Deputy Directors of COI in recent years.
