Armenia suspended its participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). This statement was made by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in an interview with the TV channel. France24.
Pashinyan stated that, from his perspective, “the collective security agreement regarding Armenia has not been implemented (…) and this cannot be overlooked.”
In this context, Armenia is freezing its participation in CSTO.
“The collective security agreement on Armenia was not implemented specifically in 2021-2022, and this could not escape our attention. We have frozen our participation in this agreement. Let’s see what happens next,” Pashinyan explained.
The Collective Security Treaty Organization was established in 2002. CSTO consists of six states: Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.
On September 19, 2023, Azerbaijani authorities announced a local operation in Karabakh. Baku announced the purpose of the operation as “suppression of large-scale provocations”, disarmament and withdrawal of Armenian army units from the territory of the region.
A day later, between the parties, with the mediation of Russian peacekeepers, achieved ceasefire agreement.
Since then, Armenia and Azerbaijan have been negotiating a peace agreement.
