The Ministry of National Education is conducting preliminary consultations on changes to the core curriculum – it is to be reduced by 20% and the changes will affect seventeen subjects, including history – schools will not teach figures such as Witold Pilecki, Maksymilian Kolbe or Fr. Popieluszko. The canon of school reading will also be limited. The guests of the “Salon Journalists” emphasized that the changes are scandalous and that knowledge from schools is being eliminated in order to impose the ideology on young people.
Changes in the core curriculum and canon of readings
The new team at the Ministry of Education wants to remove many topics related to the Catholic Church from the core curriculum, even though its influence on medieval Europe was enormous. The new basis is to change the approach to the Volhynian crime issue. The excerpt directly stating that the actions of Ukrainian nationalists constituted genocide would be removed. The Greater Poland Uprising should also be eliminated from the core curriculum.
The school reading list is also shortened. At school you don’t talk about the works of Mickiewicz, “Quo Vadis” by Henryk Sienkiewicz, “Labors of Sisyphus” by Stefan Żeromski, “King Matt the First” by Janusz Korczak, “Song of Songs”, “The Odyssey”. Students will not read Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” the Psalms of Jan Kochanowski, the works of John Paul II, or even “Janek the Musician.” The discussion of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s “In Desert and Wilderness” will be limited to only excerpts.
The struggle against Polish identity
Małgorzata Żaryn pointed out that the actions of the Ministry of Education led by Barbara Nowacka amounted to the liquidation of Polish culture.
Maybe these are bad patterns? Staś is too masculine and patriarchal, Nel is too stupid and helpless. They still shoot lions. The problem goes deeper. Minister Czarnek called it a battle against Polish identity, heritage and Christian spirit. But this does not only concern the issue of violating a certain cultural code that made intergenerational understanding possible. This is the liquidation of Polish culture. The result of this will be that I will no longer be able to communicate with my grandchildren because we will speak a different language
– said the historian and publicist.
I would like to draw attention to the interview with Aleksander Pawlicki – he heads the team preparing the history curriculum. When we hear accusations of deliberately downsizing it, exposing the Volhynian genocide, the Cursed Soldiers, and limiting the places of Polish martyrdom, we hear that this is the basis, not the program. As an appraiser who is periodically sent textbooks for assessment, I point out that they are written solely on the basis of the core curriculum.
– emphasized Małgorzata Żaryn.
Elimination of knowledge from schools
Krzysztof Skowroński said that left-wing governments are constantly trying to change the consciousness of those who could rule Poland in the future.
The attempt to change the consciousness of Western societies has been successful, but in Poland it has been difficult. As for reading in school, my kids couldn’t get through “In Desert and Wilderness.” This novel caused them problems. Thinking about how the present should talk to the past is correct thinking, but how?
– said the journalist, to which Małgorzata Żaryn pointed out that “education is effort and work and there is no reason to give up difficult things.”
You can browse and consider whether to replace one measurement with another. I am not in favor of breaking the cultural code that unites us. I’m more outraged by the changes in history. The expulsion of Pilecki, Volhynia, the Greater Poland Uprising – these are strange things. These are facts and I don’t have to suffer to absorb something that happened
– said Skowronski,
Stanisław Janecki emphasized that the situation looked much worse.
Under the slogan of eliminating ideology from schools, knowledge is being eliminated from schools. School and knowledge are pretty much the same, plus education. Eliminating knowledge from school is the intention of this government. Without knowledge you can push any ideology and everything is based on emotions, on mobilizing around emotions and slogans. And knowledge is the most effective tool for fooling people on a large scale. Knowledge is the enemy by Barbara Nowacka
– emphasized Stanisław Janecki.
